Course Description

The course offers a systematic analysis of Byzantine mosaics , with particular attention to the transition from Roman floor mosaics to Christian decorative production.
The program includes the study of the icon as a devotional and artistic object, with an in-depth study of the symbolism of the representations.

Traditional and modern techniques will be examined: from the cutting and selection of Venetian-made glass tesserae to their installation, aimed at obtaining highly precise chromatic and pictorial effects.
The activity will be aimed at the creation of an icon or religious and secular figurative subjects , allowing participants to acquire practical and theoretical skills in an art that has maintained continuity and relevance over the centuries.

1st day

  • Morning: Presentation and theoretical lesson on Byzantine mosaics

  • Afternoon: exercises and choice of subject

2nd and 3rd day

  • Creation of the mosaic work (icon or figurative subject, max 40x50 cm)

  • Delivery of certificate of participation and of the mosaic work created

The mosaic school in Tessere is open all year round and follows national holidays.

Each path is individual. The start date is freely chosen by the student, without a predetermined calendar. In case of special needs, it is possible to distribute the course hours over more days than the standard program (for example, 3 hours a day instead of 7).
