Course Description

The group course in Roman micromosaic offers a comprehensive training experience dedicated to the ancient mosaic tradition, from its Hellenistic origins to the golden age of Roman art. Participants will explore the micromosaic technique using very fine glass paste tesserae, learning the precision of cutting and setting to achieve painterly effects and exceptionally refined color gradations.

A key focus of the course is the study of emblemata, decorative panels of great aesthetic value typical of Roman mosaics. The experience is divided into two complementary parts: a study visit to the National Roman Museum – Palazzo Massimo to observe original works, followed by a practical workshop in which participants will create their own micromosaic emblem. Classes are held in small groups of up to 10 participants to ensure personalized, high-quality learning. Places are limited.

Course Schedule

Day 1

Morning: historical introduction to Roman micromosaic; analysis of Hellenistic origins and key examples of ancient mosaic art
Afternoon: presentation of materials, study of cutting techniques, and preparation of the support

Day 2

Start of practical work: design and layout of the emblem

Day 3

Placement of the first tesserae; focus on detailing and shading techniques

Day 4

Completion of the composition, refinement, and chromatic adjustment

Day 5

Finalization of the micromosaic piece and presentation of the completed works
Delivery of the certificate of participation and the finished artwork
