Course Description

The intensive Byzantine mosaic course offers a journey dedicated to the study and creation of works inspired by ancient mosaic tradition. Through theoretical and practical lessons, participants will delve into the aesthetic, technical, and symbolic principles that characterize Byzantine mosaic, with a particular focus on luminous rendering and the composition of glass and gold tesserae.

The course offers a systematic analysis of Byzantine mosaic, with particular attention to the transition from Roman floor mosaics to Christian decorative production. The program includes the study of the icon as a devotional and artistic object, with an in-depth look at the symbolism of the depictions. Traditional and modern techniques will be examined: from the cutting and selection of Venetian-made glass tesserae to their laying, aimed at achieving highly precise chromatic and pictorial effects. The activity will culminate in the creation of an icon or religious and secular figurative subjects, allowing participants to acquire practical and theoretical skills in an art form that has maintained continuity and relevance throughout the centuries.
