QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SCHOOL AND OUR MOSAIC COURSES

Who can participate in the mosaic courses?

Our courses are aimed at adults and are suitable for all levels of experience: from beginner to more experienced levels. No previous artistic experience is required.

Difference between direct and indirect technique

What is the difference between the direct and indirect methods of creating a mosaic?

A mosaic can be made using two main techniques: the direct method and the indirect method. Both are used for mosaics in marble, glass, or ceramic, but they differ in how the tesserae are placed and the final result.

Direct Method

In the direct method, the tesserae are applied one by one directly onto the final surface, such as a wall, floor, or panel. This is the ideal technique for artistic, decorative, or three-dimensional mosaics, where every detail can be controlled during the work. This method allows you to see the design and colors immediately, it is suitable for irregular or curved surfaces, and provides direct contact with the material, typical of handcrafted marble mosaics. The main disadvantage is that the adhesive can cover the underlying design.

Indirect Method

In the indirect method, the tesserae are placed in reverse on a temporary support, such as paper or mesh. Once the design is complete, the entire mosaic is transferred and fixed in its final position. This technique is widely used for large surfaces or studio production. It allows work on flat surfaces in a controlled environment, is ideal for large or complex mosaics that are later installed on-site, and makes corrections and transportation easier. The disadvantage is that the final result can only be seen after installation, and it is not possible to create sculptural mosaics, only flat ones.

Expert Advice

Both techniques are valid, simple, and suitable for beginners or experts. The indirect or reverse method involves an extra step, but it is not difficult to carry out.
